Welcome to Greened!

I have always been interested in our planet. At school, geography was one of my favourite subjects (until it stopped being about rainforest animals and became all about weather and statistics). In geography lessons at age 10, when given a map and asked to label "as much as you can," I was the only child who labelled the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.

I freely admit to being a "lazy environmentalist". I have brief bouts of action, followed by long periods of inactivity. I agree with environmental policies and watch David Suzuki and David Attenborough documentaries with fervour, but then usually forget to take my canvas bags to the supermarket. I recycle, but I don't grow my own organic vegetables (although, in my defence, I don't actually have a garden). I don't have a car, but I do let people give me lifts in theirs.

I do believe that something needs to be done about the environment. And I think that governments really need to wake up and follow some of the shining environmental examples around the world, in places such as Denmark, where they harness the wind for the bulk of their energy requirements, and Spain, where they take advantage of the natural power of the sun.

The steps we can take as individuals are a great start. But we really need a shift in attitude in North America in particular to bring us out of the dark ages of fossil fuel dependence and reliance on SUVs and into a brighter, cleaner future of renewable energy resources, public transport and gas-free vehicles. The Canadian and U.S. governments have to do more.

We need to sit up and take note of countries where they are trying not just to be environmentally friendly, but also to improve the quality of their lives. It's not about being green for the sake of it. It's realising that green is the better way to go.

Thanks for visiting!
