Speed bumps to bring green energy to London

London is set to introduce "green" speed bumps that generate electricity when a car drives over them.

The Observer's Rhodri Phillips spoke to inventor Peter Hughes about the speed bumps, or ramps, which will be used to power street light, traffic lights and road signs in London's pilot project.

"They are speed bumps, but they are not like conventional speed bumps. They don't damage your car or waste petrol when you drive over them - and they have the added advantage that they produce energy free of charge," Hughes said.

Panels in the ramps generate energy by moving up and down as cars pass over them. The ramps can be laid flat so that drivers don't realise they are there.

According to Hughes, ten of the ramps could generate the same amount of power as one wind turbine. If the trial proves successful, the speed ramps could be widely introduced across the UK.
