Electronics company Philips to make new strides in recycling

Leading electronics producer Philips has been praised by environmental groups for agreeing to change its recycling policy.

Instead of consumers paying a fixed additional fee for recycling, the company confirmed last week that it would start to integrate the recycling cost into the overall product price.

The decision follows a lengthy series of campaigns by Greenpeace, and last week's exposure of electronic waste being illegally dumped in developing countries.

Philips' acceptance of the responsibility of recycling costs is seen as a major breakthrough in e-waste recycling, as it is hoped that if companies have to bear the recycling costs of their own products, they will start to make their products easier to recycle.

"We are delighted that Philips has finally taken full financial responsibility for its own products," said Kim Schoppink, Greenpeace Netherlands toxics campaigner.

"This is a big step forward, and makes Philips a new green leader in the electronics sector."
